Lemon balm(Melissa officinalis)

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial herb that belongs to the flowering plant family. The plant is prized for its pleasant citrusy scent as well as its versatile health properties. Lemon balm is native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East, but is widely cultivated around the world, both in gardens and at home. Lemon balm is a herbaceous plant with oval leaves covered with soft hairs and small white or pale yellow flowers. The plant usually grows to a height of 30-80 cm. Lemon balm prefers a sunny or semi-shady location and well-drained, fertile soil. It is an undemanding plant that can tolerate moderate drought.

Interesting to know: Meliss arrived in the Mediterranean from the Orient centuries ago. Melissa was known as a medicinal plant in ancient Greece as early as 2000 years ago. In antiquity, the plant was associated with bees, hence its Latin name Melissa. It was believed that if you put melissa in an empty hive, it would attract a swarm of bees. According to another belief, bees will never abandon a nest with melissa growing near it.

Beliefs about bees were still alive in the Middle Ages, when sugar was expensive and honey a luxury commodity. Through German monasteries, the cultivation of molasses spread to the Nordic countries. Monks made alcohol and medicines from molasses. First drunk in monasteries, molasses tea became the drink of royalty in royal palaces.

In the Middle Ages, melissa was widely used as a medicinal herb. It was used to treat wounds, toothache, rabid animal bites and nausea during pregnancy. Melissa was believed to prevent hair loss and an amulet filled with melissa leaves was believed to bring good luck and love.
