Demeter label, what does it mean?
Demeter is the goddess of fertility, and it is no coincidence that her name has been chosen as the quality label for biodynamic products.
Soil fertility and support for natural growth are central to biodynamic agriculture. As in organic farming, no chemical fertilisers or artificial fertilisers are used. However, Demeter farmers go one step further by being 100% organic and 100% dynamic. They use only composted organic fertiliser, organic straw and biodynamic animal feed from their own farm. Demeter farmers are also going one step further in other areas, such as soil management.
Soil is like a living organism. Demeter farmers fertilize the soil not only to support plant growth, but also to nourish the soil itself. Composted manure, for example, is used for this purpose. This fertiliser is first mixed with soil organisms, which release nutrients slowly and naturally, so that plants can absorb them gradually. Fresh manure would act directly on the plants, but composted manure also feeds the soil.
Demeter farmers also work with a varied crop rotation. This means that the same crop is grown in the same field only once every 5-7 years. This is why you see a very wide range of different crops on biodynamic farms. This diversity increases plant vigour and resistance and reduces the spread of diseases and pests.
Demeter products are given time to grow and mature.
